Judrops and Owl

Judrops and owl ~ mixed media collage on paper patchwork background with Stewart Gill Metallica, Golden Fluid acrylics and scrapbook papers.

My new camera which I bought to take to Australia, has broken ~ it wasnt expensive but it got me thinking about cameras and the false economy of me always buying 'cheaper' cameras ~ I do have the worse luck ever with cameras ever ~ it must run in the family cause Stevie is the same.
Over the weekend I've been looking on line at all the different types and it's like another language ~ you get digital and then you get digital SLR!!! where do you go to for advice without someone trying to sell you something. I want one that will take good close ups of my 3D artwork (that wont fit in my scanner), one that will take good close ups of plant life and take good landscapes for my textile art research ~ is this possible. Im sure it must be, I think more research will be needed and also a trip to the camera shops in Perth :( scary places.

On a brighter note I heard from my beautiful girls again, they are having the best time ever in Australia ~ thought Id let you all see them, this was taken on their 18th birthday in November. They've booked their flights to Melbourne and will be leaving Stevie and Scarletts very soon and then this week they're climbing the Storey Bridge in Brisbane ~ what crazy girls they are.

So has anyone got the snow yet ~ so far none here in Scotland ~ hope youre all warm and cosy ~ speak again soon ~ Judy xxXxx

Hi Judy, you sound like me, I absolutely hated being without a camera even for a few days. Hope you find one you like!

Your latest collage is as beautiful as ever and how nice to use all those lovely paints and papers

Have a good weekend

Very pretty collage Judy and what a gorgeous picture of your girls! The one bit of advice I followed when getting my camera was to get one with a high optical zoom (as opposed to digital zoom) for good close up detail. Although I still manage to take duff photos at times... I blame the light!

What beautiful, beautiful girls - it must make your heart sing just to look at them. I hope they are enjoying being in Australia. My daughter, who is getting married soon, is a photographer - I will ask her for some advice on what to look for in a camera.
Cheers - Hilary in Hot, hot, Oz.

Such beautiful girls Judy! I am really pleased with my little Canon Ixus camera. It is compact and copes well with close ups. SLR's are usually bulkier and allow you more control if you want it but I find my autofocus compact is good for me. I hope you get some good impartial advice.

We have snow in Lincolnshire! More expected overnight! I will not be going out till it's cleared, I hope!

Hi Judy,

I use a kodak digital zoom camera automatic or manual if you require. Good for close ups good for far away, great price. E bay has re-furbished with full 1 year kodak guarantee at

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/KODAK-Z712-IS-7-1MP-DIGITAL-VIDEO-CAMERA-2GB-4-BONUS_W0QQitemZ130285047954QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CamerasPhoto_DigitalCameras_DigitalCameras_JN?hash=item130285047954&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1690%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

lots cheaper than Kodak itself.
I use it for faraway landscape shots and also capturing paintings for my web-site, just click and plug it into your computer, even easier than scanning.
You can have a look at my Scottish art site and see what you think.

keep away from camera shops they will want an arm and a leg.

Hey Judy,
With cameras, it depends how much you wanter to spend and if you want an SLR or not.
I can highly recommend the CANON in either. They do really high quality images. I have a canon ixus - which is a little, small happy snap camera. It has two types of macro - which you would need for close ups of any sort - most cameras will have something.
For a little more $$ The slr canons give you heaps more flexibility - you can buy a macro lens if that's what you need.
Check online reviews of brands and models that you might be interested in. My friend bought a 2nd hand SLR that had been reconditioned online at e-bay from an 'online' camera shop. It has been fabulous for her. Doing it thie way, you have the assurance that it isn't didgey, the cheaper price. and then can buy whatever lenses suit you.

My 2 cents. Hope its useful. :]
Hannah.

Well thanks for the comment on my Blog. Ineke didn't have her sketch books with her but I admire her perhaps out of all the major textile designers possibly the most.
As far as cameras go I think "Which" is good for reviews - they have an online service. Apparently the Nikon D90 is fab and I want one but have a lot of saving to do!
Good luck and let me know what you find out because I too am interested in the Macro aspect of photography with SLR.

Hi Judy...everything about your collage is beautiful (as are your girls).
Good luck in your search for a camera - I have a Fuji FinePix 9mega pixels and I'm really happy with it although its not as small as I'd like.
